Evidence-Based, Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches for Educators and Providers

At Occupational Therapy Consultants, Inc., we serve as a clinical partner for school teams, therapists, and community-based providers and families seeking current, evidence-informed perspectives on speech-language therapy. Rooted in decades of experience working in New Jersey schools, our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, strength-based, and practical for real-world educational and community settings.

Our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are NJ-licensed, school certified and hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Through structured mentorship and ongoing professional development, they remain grounded in best practices while responsive to emerging research, ensuring the guidance and support we offer is always current and impactful.

Areas of Clinical Expertise

We provide training, insight, and collaborative guidance across a range of speech-language domains, always framed by inclusive and neuroaffirming values.

Language, Cognitive-Communication, and Pragmatic Interactions

We provide comprehensive support for students with challenges in understanding, using, and navigating language across academic, cognitive, and social contexts. Our approach integrates:

  • Receptive and expressive language development, aligned with strength-based goals and IEP objectives.
  • Cognitive-communication skills such as memory, attention, organization, and flexible thinking.
  • Pragmatic language and communication, including conversation skills, interpreting nonverbal cues, and building peer relationships.

For autistic students and others with neurodevelopmental learning differences, we emphasize communication as a diverse human experience, not a deficit to be corrected. Our approach prioritizes authentic self-expression, respect for different communication styles, and collaborative goal setting that honors the student’s identity, sensory profile, and preferred modes of interaction.

Speech Production, Motor Planning, and Voice Function

Our team supports a wide range of communication differences through evidence-based approaches that address the physical, neurological, and functional components of speech. We tailor strategies to the individual, not to a “norm”, respecting diverse profiles and communication goals.

We provide:

  • Support for speech clarity and articulation, including motor planning (e.g., apraxia), oral motor coordination, and speech sound development.
  • Guidance for fluency differences, including stuttering and cluttering, with a focus on reducing communication-related anxiety and affirming individual pacing and rhythm.
  • Voice and resonance interventions, promoting healthy voice use, breath support, and vocal hygiene, especially for individuals with atypical pitch or vocal strain.
  • Auditory Processing supports and strategies, helping individuals interpret better and respond to auditory input.
  • Specialized strategies for students with developmental or medical diagnoses, including Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, and other conditions affecting speech.
  • Swallowing and feeding safety (dysphagia), offering appropriate and collaborative support when needed.

Our clinical practice balances structure with flexibility, always focusing on communication functionality, authenticity, and student-centered outcomes.
