Continuing Education/Home Study Resources for OT, OTA, PT and SLP Professionals


CEU ONLINE REQUIREMENTS IN NEW JERSEY
Physical Therapists:
According to the New Jersey Board of PT Examiners New Jersey PTs and PTAs may complete up to 10 hours of their continuing education requirement through approved home study courses, and the remaining 20 hours must be completed via a live event.
New Jersey accepts 10 hours of online continuing education courses with a maximum of 2 hours per internet course.
Occupational Therapists and Assistants:
OT: No State CE Requirements - NBCOT accepts 36 hours of Online Continuing Education Courses for NBCOT Recertification (over the course of 3 years)

OTA: No State CE Requirements - NBCOT accepts 36 hours of Online Continuing Education Courses for NBCOT Recertification (over the course of 3 years)
Speech-Language Pathologists:
The NJ Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee requires that all its licensees complete twenty (20) credits of continuing professional education during the biennial period immediately preceding their current renewal application. Use of self-assessment study courses are considered an acceptable source for continuing education; however, licensees cannot apply an more than ten (10) education hours of home study for any two year licensing period.
The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requires 30 continuing education hours over a three year period to maintain Certification of Clinical Competence.
Home Study, Online or E-courses
A home study or e-course (short for electronic course) are "lectures” that are presented via the internet to your computer. They are also available as downloads, DVD’s and sometimes books, journal articles,  etc. that are available for study and to obtain continuing education credits.
Since e-courses are not live lectures, you can "attend" them at any time and view the material at your own pace. Taking an e-course is very similar to reading a manual or book, except that the information is viewed on your computer screen. E-courses are often divided into several sections much like short chapters in a book. After beginning an e-course, you move from section to section until you have completed the course.
After completing the course, you take a multiple question test. Typically you will need to obtain a score of 80% to pass and earn credit. If you do not score 80% or better you are allowed to review the material and modify your answers until a score of 80% is reached. Once you have passed the test you will have the option of printing a certificate of completion. The certificate is proof that you have completed the course and earned the specified number of credits.
Online courses are not meant to replace group-learning seminars. However they are a great way to supplement knowledge on a topic and supplement CEUs for licensing requirements.   All professional organizations, AOTA, ASHA and APTA offer online continuing education opportunities. Their online courses are geared a bit more to the occupational and physical therapist but they have a nice way of organizing the topics into the different therapies.  Some of the topics include: Core Curriculum Compliance, Dysphagia, Eating and Feeding Issues, EVB, Handwriting, Home Modifications, Sensory Motor, etc  They are an approved provider with ASHA and AOTA, however I did not see any endorsements from APTA…PTs need to check this out.
Cost:  costs are very varied…
For offer extra savings all year long, in their Dynamic Rewards Program (DRP)where for an  annual membership fee you get 50% off any course of your choice for one year.  They also offer Bundle Programs where they group several courses together and provide discounts of 10-20%.

Additional Information:  Not a lot to choose from but is was an interesting course (DVD and home study) on Pilates.

Additional Information:  Although geared to SLP’s there are along of very interesting courses for all disciplines, especially related to school based services.

These are informational handouts designed for educators and parents and written by therapists.  

Handy Handouts® cover a variety of topics, from speech-language therapy and autism to basic concepts and reading comprehension. Handy Handouts® include up-to-date research, contact information for organizations, and product suggestions to meet the needs of children with special needs. The handouts are free.
